It's been humbling and awe inspiring to see the incredibly range of innovation coming out of new open mobile platforms such as the iPhone. It's 13 years later now, and the landscape of the mobile web and the converged Internet is really truly here, but I still feel like we're just getting started in many respects. For shits and giggles, i also connected it to the coffee maker just so that I could say that I had brewed coffee from my phone from across town. I convinced a developer in Florida to build an X10 'custom tag' extension for ColdFusion (you can still find the extension on the Adobe site), picked up some X10 gear at RadioShack, and connected it to lighting and my coffee maker.įrom my mobile phone, i was able to pull up from anywhere in the world whether the lights were on or off and switch them from my phone. In addition to creating some sample apps that would showcase using CF and HDML doing database app stuff, I wanted to explore the 'converged device' vision a little further, so in a bit of uber-geekdom I created a home automation application application that tied together a mobile web app controllable via the PocketNet device, a ColdFusion server app in my home, connected to an X-10 controller system that could automate devices in my home over the electrical network in my house. You can see our announcement from back then here. I stumbled across Unwired Planet through some news article, went and met the founders, we hit it off, and soon thereafter ColdFusion was the first commercial web application server to natively support HDML application authoring and delivery. ![]() I was convinced that the proliferation of IP-connected devices was soon among us and wanted to showcase how new server-based runtime platforms could support this vision. During the default, 37-degree setting test, I dialed it down to the coldest setting ("Meat") to see if it could hold a colder temperature than the rest of the fridge. ![]() My other complaint with the refrigerator's performance is with that temperature-adjustable pantry drawer. That's clear evidence that the Door-in-Door compartment compromises performance in the rest of the refrigerator, too, at least to a small extent. In each heat map, they show a clear trend towards warmer temperatures on the right half of the fridge, where the Door-in-Door compartment lives. One other quick note on that Door-in-Door compartment. You've also got a temperature-adjustable pantry drawer that runs the width of the bottom of the fridge - a nice feature, but one that didn't prove all that useful when we tested it (more on that in just a bit.) It saves space inside of the fridge and keeps the interior of the door perfectly flat, which makes it easier to fit things into the in-door shelves. My favorite is the SlimSpace ice maker, which packs the entirety of the ice maker into the left door. Our test 2-liter sat awkwardly over the edge of the shelf below as a result.Īs for features, there's some good stuff going on inside of this fridge. You can slide one of the main body shelves toward the back of the fridge to make room for tall items below it, but it only slides back so far. The Door-in-Door shelves would be the optimal place for them, but none of those shelves are tall enough to fit one, and none of them are adjustable. My only quibble was that there wasn't a good spot for 2-liter bottles. #Lg instaview refrigerator full#Still, I had no trouble fitting our full load of test groceries inside, and, pizza box aside, I fit our large stress test items in, too. I thought it would be interesting to see what might happen if you precisely and directly bring specific tales from different times into conversation. For this response, then, I want you to have a little fun with these various tales, which ARE simultaneously meant for entertainment while also being intended to intrigue and educate readers/viewers about certain moral ideas. And in class we will be watching clips from several films that work in a similar manner, taking well-known fairy tale material and offering a modern spin on it. On the date when this Blog post is due, you will be moving past the Grimms and Disney to consider how several well-known literary authors have re-imagined fairy tales for a modern audience, especially for a more mature and cynical twenty-first century reader. It may come as no surprise, therefore, that these themes are writ large in what has become the most famous series of fairy tales ever produced: the various films by Walt Disney and his company that are based upon earlier fairy tales. Grimm’s tales offer fascinating resources for considering various historical subjects from the early nineteenth century, but especially topics revolving around childhood, gender, family, class, and socioeconomic hardship. In both the German and English-speaking worlds, the most influential collection of premodern fairy tales was Grimm’s Fairy Tales, which was originally published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1812 (under the German title of Kinder und Hausmärchen, or ‘Children’s and Household Tales’). ![]() ![]() This gamemode birthed many classic maps such as Upward, Badwater Basin, Frontier, Borneo and many others.
![]() ![]() That second/third/fourth playthrough really gave you a sense that the developers knew what they were doing when designing it the first time. Thus, you’d play through the whole darn thing again, finding ways to make it more difficult. You gotta get your money’s worth, after all. Beans quest pc series#In that sense, the Bean’s Quest series gives you a rather old-school taste of satisfaction, the kind that comes from owning an expensive game and placing dumb limitations on yourself to complete it again. ![]() I played with a normal current-gen controller, and experienced zero problems. ![]() Even so, slippery controls will never lead to Bean’s demise, nor do the controls get in the way. I imagine that there’s an upper limit to the number of jumps in most stages (some of them certainly cannot work with just one), but there’s definitely hints of design. Yes, both restart you at the beginning of very short levels, and both track your skill via some exterior function (Super Meat Boy uses time as a limiter instead), but Bean Dreams gives you a more quantifiable measure of success. It’s interesting that I prefer this style over something like masocore’s poster child Super Meat Boy. I don’t exactly know what beating those arbitrary challenges unlock, but it better be something good! With enough practice and memorization, though, I found that number dwindling with repeat tries. That counter on the upper part of the screen shows you how many jumps are required for an expert to clear the stage, and that number often seems insurmountable. This plays into Bean Dreams’ more “hardcore” challenge: the game wants you to complete each level in a certain number of jumps. You can imagine the design possibilities from there, and Kumobius certainly did! Many other power-ups and variations thereof certainly come to the fore, but my small taste gave me a good sense of the quality underneath. However, the trick comes in using the dash before you land, since you can perform it at any point in a jump. That one dash per jump allows you to fly across the screen at a pace and eliminate certain blocks on most stages, as well as push objects like boxes. Here, Chili Peppers give you an air dash. Mostly, you’ll just gasp at that moment right before you land on a particularly precarious spot, or jump on top of enemies over a chasm of doom.īean Dreams also adds power-ups which augment your abilities. You can change the direction of Bean in mid-air, meaning that Kumobius designs many levels with precision in mind. Even so, that function hides a surprisingly amount of nuance. Given the lack of tactile control via a controller (and the game’s obvious smartphone origins), you’re merely guiding the jump arc. The jump physics work well for this sort of game. He will bounce jump repeatedly until he dies by hitting an enemy or deadly obstacle, so it is in your best interest to guide him accordingly. You, the player guide him through levels with various environmental obstacles towards the end of the level. Bean, the sombrero-wearing cactus creature and mascot of Kumobius, jumps repeatedly. Think of it as a combination of a platformer and a time attack game simultaneously. If that doesn’t sound like easy fun, what does?Īnd by easy, I don’t mean to imply that Bean Dreams does not present its own challenges. You need to rescue your girlfriend in the process of restoring yourself back to normal. I mean, seriously, the plot consists of this: you’re a man named Emilio turned into a Mexican jumping bean by an evil wizard. It doesn’t hurt that the thing itself looks and sounds unbelievably cute! Yes, I went there.Īlso, most screenshots in this article come from the first game, but the graphical style looks incredibly similar to the sequel. Bean Dreams interested me far more purely from the level of accessible, easy fun. I just couldn’t get into that one, much as I tried. I know I’m supposed to be excited for Duet, your game involving a multi-tasking Super Hexagon-like experience. ![]() ![]() ![]() After a lot of strange things happen to Ming, Nim is initially convinced Bayan wishes Ming to succeed Nim, but it turns out not to be what the characters and even me expected. Then later the film will focus on Nim's niece, Ming. Bayan is an ancestral God and has been possessing women in Nim's family for generations. The film itself tells about a group of Thai documentary team traveling to the northeast part of Thailand, Isan to document the daily life of a local medium, Nim, who is possessed by the spirit of Bayan. ![]() With that experience, the film feels relatable and it's easier for me to follow the plot, moreover, I often hear this type of story when hanging out with friends and will never get bored. I myself belong to the group who have only seen people affected by this shaman's witchcraft, the victims are from my own family but thankfully my brother has recovered. As a person who was born in Southeast Asia, it's no stranger to shamanism, regardless of whether you have used his services or not, but at least you must have heard stories or seen people who are victims of shamanic practices. Without a doubt, The Medium is absolutely one of the most creepiest film I watched last year. But if you are interested in the show be ware of the first half. So would I recommend anyone to watch this? No. ![]() #The medium full movie movie#Overall, this movie could benefit from some serious editing and compression into a standard one/one-half hour movie. The pace is beyond sluggish with a smattering of interesting incidences. The scares are relatively low and the movie is more into the depiction of gory or revolting behaviour. There was zero audience engagement with respect to this theme. So I am confused whether this was actually supposed to be found footage horror in which case this is nowhere near 'Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum' standards. I felt their presence was superfluous because if the intent was to gain a third-party perspective, there should have been more interactions between the camera crew and the audience/viewers since, the movie is what they 'filmed'. When the story started picking up about monitoring the possessed person the camera crew started communicating with the possessed's family regarding the footage and the last half hour they were as active as the rest of the cast. The camera crew did not communicate much in terms of the story progression in the first one and half hour. #The medium full movie tv#Now, speaking of the biography/reality tv portion of this movie it was majorly passive. While 'The Medium' suffered from a sluggish plot line and inconsistent pacing, it was the farcical ending which was the final nail in it's coffin. What fails this movie is also it's train wreck of an ending which begins half hour before the ending credits and just like the sluggish pace of it's intro, is slow but devolves into a complete parody. There are some scare-inducing moments, but when a movie is over 2 hours the moments feel extremely minuscule. It's more of a supernatural intent and horrific fascination with which we watch the behaviour of a possessed person. While the story of possession becomes proven and the nieces antics become crazier there very little horror. Unfortunately things don't get any better after one hour. As one of the reviewers previously mentioned, the first half could have been compressed into 12-15 minutes. This would be acceptable if 'The Medium' was a thriller but it isn't and it is also not capable of keeping the audience engaged cause it's first half is extremely boring. The creep factor of this movie is extremely slow. We are one hour 10 minutes into the movie and I am yet to be scared. Even I can introduce my family in lesser time and I have 21 first cousins.Īnyway after the sluggish introductions we delve deeper into the character of the medium's niece who I must say portrayed her character pretty well. This portion of the movie narrative takes almost 45 mins. As we follow her life, we are introduced to a her family members and the complicated family dynamics. The premise of the movie is interesting, we have a camera crew that is following a 'medium/psychic' who is purported to be possessed by one of the local Gods. Let us first tackle the 'horror' portion of the movie and all it's entailed expectations. I say try because I think it failed in generating sufficient interest or traction in either of it's intended genres. Similar to the American film 'The exorcism of Emily Rose' which combines the horror genre with courtroom drama, 'The Medium' tries to combine the horror genre with biography/reality tv.
